Understand what the pattern protects
Addictive behavior often develops as a way to survive pain, trauma, isolation, or overwhelming emotion. Counseling creates room to understand that history without reducing you to it.

Book a free consultationAddiction is not a moral failure. It is often a human response to pain, trauma, disconnection, and suffering.
Shame can keep people isolated and make change harder. Teresa creates a warm, direct, and non-judgmental space where you can examine what is happening, understand what keeps the pattern in place, and decide what you want to change.
You do not need to arrive with a perfect label, a fixed recovery goal, or certainty about what comes next.
A recovery story
After years in recovery, one client returned to counseling following a relapse that left them frightened, ashamed, and afraid of losing the life they had built. Beneath that fear was a clear hope: addiction would not define what came next.
The work began with safety. Rather than treating the relapse as proof of failure, Teresa and the client explored the circumstances surrounding it and the patterns the addiction had been trying to manage. As trust developed, earlier experiences of trauma and disconnection came into view, alongside the people and inner strengths that had helped the client survive.
Over time, the client began responding to stress differently, strengthening their support system, and trusting themselves again. The transformation reached beyond substance use. Shame no longer had the final word about who they were or what kind of life remained possible.
“Recovery is not only about abstinence. It is about reclaiming the parts of yourself that addiction and trauma convinced you were lost.”

Reasons people reach out
The work is collaborative and shaped around your needs, strengths, relationships, and stage of change.
Addictive behavior often develops as a way to survive pain, trauma, isolation, or overwhelming emotion. Counseling creates room to understand that history without reducing you to it.
Together, you can identify triggers, practice emotional regulation, strengthen boundaries, and develop ways to respond when familiar urges or situations return.
Healing is not only about stopping a behavior. It is also about creating a life, relationships, and daily practices that feel more honest and sustainable.
You do not have to choose the perfect category before reaching out.
Individual counseling may begin with trauma, anxiety, grief, identity, relationships, or a life transition. Addiction counseling places greater attention on substance use or another compulsive pattern, its effects, and the support needed for change.
The two often overlap. Teresa can help clarify the focus during an initial consultation and discuss a referral when another level or type of care would better support you.
